DIY Aluminum Coffee Table Build

The best thing I've made... I think.

Welcome to the first edition of Driftwood’s Digest. I’m showing you how to build my aluminum coffee table—a minimalist, industrial piece that adds a sleek touch to any space. I’ve always been fascinated with stainless steel and furniture molding together. This was inspired by a few plywood creations I’ve seen over the years. It’s important to note, if you want this guy to be wider, you can do so if you’re savvy with cutting metal or can find wider prefabricated sheets. Below, you’ll find the materials needed, dimensions, and step-by-step instructions to recreate it yourself.

Materials Needed:

• Plywood sheet (12"W x 48"L) – Home Depot (multi-layered for extra thickness)

• 2 aluminum sheets (12" x 24") – Home Depot

• 4 coffee table legs from Tiptoe

• 1 small polyurethane Behr Oak stain

• Sponges for staining

• Gorilla Glue

• Sandpaper (fine grit)

Next Steps:

1. Prepare the Plywood Base:

   • Cut the plywood to 12"W x 48"L.

   • If layering for thickness, apply Gorilla Glue between layers and clamp until dry.

   • Sand all edges and surfaces to smooth out rough spots.

2. Apply the Stain:

   • Use Behr Oak polyurethane stain with a sponge applicator for an even coat.

   • Allow drying time as recommended on the label before handling.

3. Attach the Aluminum Sheets:

   • Cut or adjust aluminum sheets to fit the plywood top.

   • Secure them using Gorilla Glue or another strong adhesive, ensuring a firm bond.

   • Press and smooth out any air bubbles or misalignment.

4. Install the Table Legs:

   • Position the Tiptoe legs at each corner.

   • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to attach them securely.

5. Final Touches:

   • Sand any sharp aluminum edges for safety.

   • Inspect the table for any needed adjustments or refinements.

From the objects and furniture to a sound system I’d never though I’d see. They do supper clubs and various events. A must check out.
